How would you describe the world today? Let’s define what we’re feeling, seeing, and experiencing. Is it certainty or uncertainty?
Certainty - assurance, confidence, fact, sure-thing, guarantee, security…
Uncertainty - fear, doubt, ambiguity, hesitation, insecurity, confusion…
It’s normal to have worries and fears about the state of the world. Daily, people’s lives are interrupted or derailed due to circumstances beyond their control. We have all set goals and dreams that ended up with obstacles or setbacks.
This could be a time in history or your life to discern what deserves your attention and what is unwelcome. What if, amid these challenges, you could let go of some worries and fears?
Letting go is not about letting go of our hopes and aspirations or giving up on who we are meant to be. And it's not denying that people are grieving, lamenting, and hurting. It’s more about adjusting our sails and re-charting our course amongst the change.
I look at this from a few perspectives.
- Confusion, upheaval, and exhaustion require us to rest. Take a break from the news and social media, the noisy distractions of our lives. Focus on what you can control: eating well, exercising, and having a sleep routine. Take care of yourself.
- Uncertainty encourages us to work alongside others. We cannot fix or solve the suffering of our families, neighbors, and coworkers and those around the globe. But we can extend a helping hand. We belong to one another, we must look out for one another.
- Feeling powerless can make it hard to have or keep the faith. Collaborate with Spirit. What is God asking, inviting, or offering you today?
Hard times and hardships we endure. It’s ok not to know how to change anything. Why do so many of life’s problems have no answers? Are we asking to be rescued from our suffering, or are we asking for strength and courage?
What should we do in times of uncertainty?
- Escape into nature; seek a sunny spot by a window; light a candle, make a fire; brew coffee or tea; pray/meditate/breathe; call a trusted friend.
Where might we find safety and sanctuary?
- Art, music, poetry, and story; at church, school, work, therapy, a park, the beach, the mountains, our community; among our family and friends.
Life will have sunny days and rainy days. The storms of life can up-anchor and set us adrift at any moment. For you, I desire bright, calm, and secure waters.
We will not change the world all at once, just a little bit at a time. Being adaptable versus resistant to your (our collective) anger, sadness, and fear helps us keep an open heart and mind. This may be unfamiliar territory for the first time or the nth time, but we can benefit from the wisdom gained (and be prepared that it might take a while!).
My sweet friend gave the best advice: “You cannot be grateful and anxious at the same time. It is impossible.” She’s right! One breath, one moment, one experience at a time.
We will get a "second wind" if we pause and reflect on the goodness and beauty of the world. Lean into the mystery, and do not lose awareness of God’s presence. Gratitude, kindness, and compassion will help guide your boat in the right direction.
I was uncertain (wink!) how to end this post.
We can end it here.
"Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things."
1 Corinthians 13:7
I can rest in knowing that GOD IS LOVE.
Peace.
